How to Prepare for Your First Standby Flight

1 min read

Part of our complete guide: What Is a Flight Pass and How Does It Work?

Direct answer: Arrive early, carry valid ID/passport, dress neat-casual or better, pick flights with open seats (off-peak days, high-frequency routes), pack carry-on when possible, and be unfailingly polite to gate agents.

Before you leave home

  • Confirm you're listed on your flight and check the seat availability for that flight and the next two departures.
  • Carry government ID (domestic) or a passport valid 6+ months (international).
  • Pack carry-on only when you can — if you roll to another flight, checked bags complicate things.

Choosing flights wisely

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays typically have the most open seats.
  • Early-morning departures give you the whole day of later flights as fallback.
  • Hub-to-hub routes run many frequencies — more chances per day.

At the airport

  • Arrive at the gate at least 45–60 minutes before departure.
  • Don't crowd the podium; agents call standby names after boarding.
  • Whatever seat you're given, take it gracefully — your conduct reflects on your sponsoring employee.
